I’d Like to Marry Durham

I’ve had such an awesome weekend so far!

I started my day today with a morning run with the girls — our last training run for the D.C. National Half Marathon next weekend! I can’t believe our training has already come to an end!

Yes, we take prom photos before our runs.

Don’t you? 🙂

This is our taper week — I originally had 10 miles on my training plan but we all decided 7 would be smarter for a good taper. Sweet! 7 sounds so easy now. I know, that’s totally warped.

We had a great run — 7 miles in 1:00:51, for an average pace of 8:41 — yay especially considering it was really hilly!

  • Mile 1: 8:44
  • Mile 2: 8:28
  • Mile 3: 8:14
  • Mile 4: 8:52
  • Mile 5: 9:07 (super crazy long intense hill)
  • Mile 6: 8:52
  • Mile 7: 8:31

Woohoo! Ended strong, too 🙂 Feeling good and ready to rock next weekend! It’s nice to not be super sore for once right now, ha.

I wore my CamelBak as usual on today’s run — I’m debating whether or not I should wear it next weekend for the half marathon. I wore it for my first half marathon and liked having the access to water whenever I wanted it (especially since I’ll be eating my Hammer Gel at random times), plus a place to stash my camera… but I think it does slow me down a teeeeeensy bit. Debating if having water when I want it and a storage pocket is worth it or not! Thoughts?

I spent the rest of the day studying, studying, studying… it was GORGEOUS outside and it was torture to not be out playing, but I compromised by studying out on our porch 🙂

As I mentioned, I have 4 tests (3 in person, 1 very time intensive take home) and one group paper due this coming week. Bah! Today I studied for my Medical Nutrition Therapy exam. Interesting stuff, but lots to learn!

While I studied, I also iced my legs! Love, love, LOVE Paradice Packs:

6 hours of studying later, it was time for a serious break! I had plans to meet my high school friends Hilary and Kristi and their husbands for dinner and drinks at a new place in Durham called Fullsteam Brewery!

When we arrived, we discovered there was a random street festival going on right outside the brewery?!

Awesome! Apparently it was the “Marry Durham” festival, because everyone loves Durham so much they want to marry it? Lol. So random/cute!

We decided to just get beers at the brewery and walk around exploring the festival!

I think you all can guess which beer I got… yep — the Hogwash: “if bacon were beer.” HA. Awesome! It was tasty — very smoky and dark! Kristi’s husband CJ got the Sweet Potato Lager (“Twist on Carver”) — I tried that too and it was AMAZING! Totally worth coming back for.

And then — we set out to explore!

I loved all the food carts — I felt like I was back in Austin or something!

We ended up at the taco/slider food truck!

It was the coolest ever because they had old school TETRIS that you could play while you waited for your food!!

Best thing ever, right?!

The menu was pretty awesome looking, too:

I ordered the 12 Hour Brisket Slider and the Carolina Carnitas Slider:

Plus the Sweet Potato Tako (everything was really small in size — it’s hard to tell in the photos!):

Everything was actually AMAZING! Very fresh. I loved the addition of the cilantro, avocado, and sprouts.

Mmmm mmm good. What a fun, totally random night! This is why I love living in this area — there’s always fun stuff like that going on 🙂

I’m off to bed — on the docket for tomorrow is:

  • Early a.m. — write my section of our group paper, due Monday
  • Late a.m. — go biking with friends Tim and Lindsey 🙂
  • All afternoon — work on Epidemiology take home exam 🙁
  • Early evening — meeting (+ dinner) with group to finalize group paper
  • Evening — continue working on Epi exam
  • Late evening — collapse into bed.

Whew — I’m tired just thinking about all that. Goodnight! 🙂
