Weekend Food + Fitness

Hey guys! Boy, is it hot here. I took an Uber ride 1 mile this morning instead of walking – no shame. Can’t wait til it cools down and walking is actually enjoyable again!

We stuck around DC this weekend and got in some fun adventures despite the heat. On Friday night, Matt had to work late so I had a cozy solo night – I made a shrimp pasta Blue Apron dish (plus some additional frozen peas for more veg volume) and then kicked it on the couch with some Netflix. Super relaxing!

On Saturday morning, Matt and I hit up Urban Athletic Club (via ClassPass for me) for a fun boot camp workout with my buddy Kathleen. She’s almost 8 months pregnant now and still crushing it! So proud of her.

Post-workout, the three of us met up with Kathleen’s husband Zach for a little brunch action at Kafe Leopold, nearby in Georgetown. Avocado toast FTW – plus an unpictured iced whole milk latte. I got a side salad, too, because I wanted some veggie volume – I was super hungry! They had small sliced apple and radish on the salad – great crunchy toppers!

Matt and I spent the rest of the day relaxing and getting some stuff done around the house. We went to dinner at a friend’s place on Saturday night – I didn’t get any photos but we had a blast! Delicious pasta with shredded pork – perfect fuel for my Sunday long run.

My track buddy and I knew it was going to be really hot on Sunday so we made plans to meet at Fletcher’s Cove on the C&O Canal so we could do the entire run on the shaded Capital Crescent Trail. She had a longer run on the docket (she’s training for Chicago, which is a few weeks before the Marine Corps Marathon, which I’m running) so she headed out at 6 a.m. for some extra miles then met up with me at 7 a.m. to do the remaining 12. Even at 7 it was already crazy hot and humid!

The three of us (me, my track buddy Diane, and one of her friends) set off north on the Capital Crescent trail. Our goal: no heat stroke. We slowed our pace and made frequent stops for water breaks/stretching. The shade on the trail was so amazing – it made a HUGE difference.

Despite the heat/humidity, I actually felt pretty decent on this run! We did 6 miles up, just past downtown Bethesda, and 6 miles back. I had my Nathan hydration vest with me as usual and made sure to drink a lot of water, and I also ate a couple Clif margarita shot bloks – love these because they are super salty. Great for summer runs!

The way back was especially awesome because it’s slightly uphill the whole way out – which means you get a nice slight downhill on your return! After my past two long runs were total struggle fests, it felt good to have a decent run. Just over 12 miles – check! My legs are sooo sore today with the boot camp + long run combo – definitely enjoying a rest day today!

I pounded some tart cherry juice and a banana with almond butter when I got home just before showering, and then Matt and I went to brunch with family. Workout + brunch is clearly my thing! We hit up Boulevard Woodgrill in Clarendon. I had an unpictured salad to start and then enjoyed their open faced omelette – ham, cheese, bacon, asparagus, and happiness. Their breakfast potatoes were awesome too – so crispy!
